  • Although William Crookes did not directly invent this tube it still bears his name. In 1868 during the last year of his life, Julius Plücker developed a gas discharge tube featuring a cross shaped anode. Plücker wanted to determine wheather cathode rays travle in straight lines. His hypothesis was correct as demonstrated by the cross shaped shadow produced by the anode while electrified.  View full details
